The Hip-Hop Word Count (HHWC) is a searchable ethnographic database built from the lyrics of over 40,000 Hip-Hop songs from 1979 to present day. The database is the heart of an online analysis tool that generates textual and quantified reports on searched phrases, syntax, memes and socio-political ideas.

The HHWC visually represents analyses of the relationships, connections, and patterns between song lyric content and analyzed song Meta data.

The HHWC is the engine for a technology-based curriculum that helps students in the critical middle-school years by moving a marginalized group to the center, where they serve as the knowledge expert. Using Hip-Hop lyrics & technology to teach language arts and mathematics helps to meet the demands of a critical, savvy and connected American youth.

Nov 18, 2000 – December 9, 2001

With the valued assistance of Danny Simmons’ Corridor Gallery, Decent Of The Abiku: Social Realism and Cultural Exchange features the work of three emerging artists whose works represent the many stages and subtleties of Black life in America.

Jules Arthur examines the range of internal beauty and turmoil that exists within the African Diaspora. With startling clarity he explores the migration of ex-slaves to the Midwest, the accomplishments of great men like Frederick Douglass and James Beckworth, and the lives of ordinary people confronted with remarkable circumstances.

Gary Grier‘s subjects are immersed in the business of living and his resulting paintings are snapshots of life, stripped of social facades. Through his use of light and color, Grier explores the images of the every-day, revealing the layers of complexity present in daily events.

Inspired by a dream, Feijao painted a series of mildly abstracted pieces that present the future, not in the chronological sense, but rather in the possibilities, the expanses of the mind in its conscious and unconscious states giving rise to a sense of the fantastic within the ordinary.

The work of these young artists provides a comprehensive vision of the movement of African peoples through the American social landscape. Descent of the Abiku, is a living expression of the endurance and survival of a displaced people.
